What have the SDGs achieved so far, and why should we accelerate progress?

The first report on the Sustainable Development Goals tells us why.

As we know, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were agreed by resolution of the United Nations on September 2015. They are a set of 17 goals with 169 targets, following from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which were supposed to be achieved by 2015, and focusing on social progress, economic growth and environmental protection[1], what is called altogether sustainable development.

Half a year from the beginning of their implementation, a first report has been published underlying the challenges on each one of the goals and the need to implement all-encompassing solutions.

Amongst the areas where opportunities for improvement are required most urgently are the enhancement of precise data capturing to identify problems and find appropriate solutions; and the inclusion of the vulnerable communities in the solution generation and the enjoyment of opportunities.

What is this telling us?

More than results, the first report on the SDGs serves as an attention call to accelerate the implementation of the goals proposed. If we want to have a real impact by 2030, more than the one obtained by the MDGs, there’s a lot of work to be done! This is why we exist.

What are your ideas to radically accelerate the implementation of the SDGs?
